Last week, our buddy BillS commented on our “buck naked black bois” post, saying: “I love #32 for his smile. Buck Naked. Smiles! Hmmm. A not-too subtle post-request! LOL”
Of course, “smiles” posts are always favorites of ours so this is a post request we love. Nothin’ better than a nekid dude flashing a big smile… in addition to whatever else he’s flashing 🙂
At the end of the first show Amy was on, Dub (who always handles the remote) hit “pause,” looked at us and said “Amy used to be a boy, didn’t she?” I said “Yup. She’s transitioning from being a boy to being a girl. She’s “transgender.” Dub said “Howz that work?” I said “Well, I’m not an expert but when a baby is born it’s sex is determined by its’ outside body parts. Basically, boys have a penis and testicles and girls don’t. But physical characteristics don’t always tell the whole story. Sometimes how a person’s body looks on the outside doesn’t match how their gender feels in their brain. So they sometimes change how they look on the outside – because they can’t change their brain. It’s done mainly with hormones and the way they dress and wear their hair – but sometimes surgery is involved. We’ll look on line and find you some reading material on the subject. O.K.?”
He said, “Do you think she’s a happy person now?” I said “She sure seems to be.” Dub said “I hope so. I think everyone should do what they need to do to be happy.”
I honestly don’t know when it’s appropriate to talk about these things with kids… but Dub is a very mature 9 year-old and David and I have agreed we’ll always be honest with him regardless of the subject. Sometimes being a parent is a challenge.
